the machine shop

All 256 elementary cellular automata, one rule at a time. Pick a rule and watch it run.

A row of cells. Each new row is decided by the three cells above it, and the eight possible neighbourhoods are the eight bits of the rule number. That is the whole machine. Rule 110 can compute anything; rule 0 cannot be bothered.

Rule 110, running from one live cell.

111 110 101 100 011 010 001 000
  0 1 1 0 1 1 1 0
rule 110

The eight columns above are the eight neighbourhoods, high to low. Drag the rule slider and watch which bit you just flipped.

every world

your persona

A small sky of stars you place, and what the site has read of you. Every world reads from both, and both stay in this browser.

constellation

Tap the sky to place a star, drag a star to move it, tap one to read its thought. Several worlds read this one sky, each its own way.

orientation

It never asks you to describe yourself, and it never asks the same way twice. The mood atlas shows every way it asks and every answer it can arrive at.
